BeginnerPlurals
How nouns form their plural in Spanish, English and Chinese.
对比语言
Spanish and English add suffixes to form plurals, with many irregular exceptions. Chinese nouns are generally invariable; plurality is shown through context, numerals, or 们/些.
Overview
Pluralization marks more than one. Every language handles it differently.
- Spanish: Adds -s or -es. Articles and adjectives must agree in gender and number. Many nouns ending in consonants add -es. A few are invariable.
- English: Adds -s or -es. Many irregular plurals survive from Old English. Uncountable nouns resist pluralization. Collective nouns vary between singular and plural verbs.
- Chinese: Nouns do not change form for plural. Number is shown through numerals + classifiers, context, or the suffix 们 (limited to pronouns and human nouns). There is no agreement system.
Spanish
Regular plurals
| Ending | Rule | Example |
|---|---|---|
| vowel | add -s | libro → libros, mesa → mesas |
| consonant | add -es | papel → papeles, mujer → mujeres |
| -z | change to -c, add -es | lápiz → lápices, pez → peces |
| -í / -ú | add -s or -es | rubí → rubíes, tabú → tabúes |
Nouns that add -es
Most consonant-ending nouns:
- la ciudad → las ciudades
- el reloj → los relojes
- la voz → las voces
- el mes → los meses
Accent mark changes
Some nouns lose their accent in plural:
- el árbol → los arboles (stress shifts)
- el éxamen → los exámenes (some dialects)
- el íngles → los ingleses
Articles and adjectives agree
The article, noun, and adjective must all agree:
- el coche rojo → los coches rojos (masc sing → masc pl)
- la mesa roja → las mesas rojas (fem sing → fem pl)
- un niño pequeño → unos niños pequeños
- una niña pequeña → unas niñas pequeñas
Singular nouns ending in -s
Not all -s endings are plural:
- el paraguas (umbrella — singular)
- el analisis (analysis — singular)
- el lunes (Monday — singular)
- la cruces (cross — singular)
Compound nouns
Only the noun element typically pluralizes:
- el abrelatas (can opener — singular, despite -s)
- los cumpleaños (birthdays)
- los padres (parents)
Plural of surnames
Surnames are invariable:
- los García (the Garcías — no change to surname)
- los López (the Lópezes — sometimes -es is added in informal contexts)
English

| -f, -fe | change to -ves | knife → knives, leaf → leaves |
| consonant + -y | change to -ies | baby → babies, city → cities |
| vowel + -y | add -s | boy → boys, key → keys |
Irregular plurals

| thesis | theses | academic |
| datum | data | data is now often singular |
| medium | media | media is now often singular |

Usage: -s plurals are increasingly common for everyday use (stadiums, syllabuses), while classical plurals persist in academic writing.
Uncountable nouns
No plural form; use quantifiers:
| Uncountable | Quantifier |
|---|---|
| water | a glass of water |
| advice | a piece of advice |
| information | some information |
| furniture | a piece of furniture |
| luggage | some luggage |
| money | some money |
| research | some research |
| equipment | some equipment |
Common error: advices → advice (uncountable)
Collective nouns
British English often uses plural verbs; American English uses singular:
- BrE: The team are playing well.
- AmE: The team is playing well.
Both: The team is winning. (when the group acts as a unit)
Chinese
No plural inflection
Chinese nouns do not change for plural:
- 书 = book / books
- 学生 = student / students
- 猫 = cat / cats
Context or numerals indicate plurality:
- 我有书。(I have books. — plural from context)
- 我有三本书。(I have three books. — explicit plural)
们 for people
们 attaches to pronouns and some human nouns to mark plural:
| Singular | Plural |
|---|---|
| 我 (I) | 我们 (we) |
| 你 (you) | 你们 (you pl) |
| 他 (he) | 他们 (they [masc/mixed]) |
| 她 (she) | 她们 (they [fem]) |
| 它 (it) | 它们 (they [things]) |
With human nouns (acceptable but not required):
- 朋友们 (friends)
- 老师们 (teachers)
- 同学们 (classmates)
Cannot use 们 with non-human nouns:
- ❌ 书们 (ungrammatical)
- ❌ 猫们 (ungrammatical)
些 for indefinite plural
些 means “some” and marks indefinite plurality:
- 这些书 (these books)
- 那些人 (those people)
- 有些事 (some matters)
No agreement
Chinese verbs and adjectives do not agree with number:
- 这本书很好。(This book is good. — singular)
- 这些书很好。(These books are good. — adjective unchanged)
Measure words for plurality
Chinese uses classifiers to show “counted” plurality:
- 三本书 (three [CL] books)
- 两只猫 (two [CL] cats)
- 几个人 (how many people?)
Without a numeral, the noun is unmarked for number:
- 我喜欢猫。(I like cats. — generic, no plural marker needed)
