BeginnerSuperlatives
How Spanish, English and Chinese express the highest degree of comparison.
对比语言
Superlatives express the highest degree of a quality. Spanish uses definite article + más/menos + adjective. English uses -est or most/least + adjective. Chinese uses 最 + adjective.
Overview
Superlatives express the highest or lowest degree of a quality within a group.
- Spanish: Uses the definite article + más (most) or menos (least) + adjective. Some irregular forms (mejor, peor). The article agrees in gender and number.
- English: Uses the suffix -est for short adjectives or most/least + adjective for longer ones. Some irregular forms (best, worst, least).
- Chinese: Uses 最 (most) before the adjective. No inflectional change. 得 may appear before 最 in verbal predicates.
