AdvancedSemantic Roles
How Spanish, English and Chinese encode who does what to whom in a sentence.
对比语言
Semantic roles describe the underlying meaning of participants: agent, patient, experiencer, beneficiary, instrument. Languages map these roles to grammatical positions differently.
Overview
Semantic roles describe the underlying meaning of participants in an event, independent of grammatical position.
- Agent: The entity that intentionally performs an action.
- Patient: The entity that undergoes the action.
- Experiencer: The entity that experiences a mental state or perception.
- Recipient/Beneficiary: The entity that receives or benefits.
- Instrument: The entity used to perform the action.
- Theme: The entity that is transferred or located.
Languages map these roles to grammatical functions (subject, object) differently.
Spanish
Agent + Patient (transitive)
- Juan rompió el jarrón. (John broke the vase. — agent = subject, patient = object)
- María escribió una carta. (María wrote a letter.)
- El perro mordió al cartero. (The dog bit the mailman.)
Patient promotion (se + intransitive)
Spanish uses se to promote the patient to subject without naming the agent:
- El jarrón se rompió. (The vase broke [itself].)
- La puerta se abrió. (The door opened.)
- El coche se vendió. (The car sold.)
Note: Se marks the non-volitional nature of the event.
Experiencer as subject
- Juan vio a María. (John saw María. — experiencer = subject)
- María siente dolor. (María feels pain.)
- Pedro quiere agua. (Pedro wants water.)
Gustar-type verbs (experiencer as indirect object):
- A Juan le gusta el café. (To Juan pleases coffee. — stimulus = subject)
- A María le duele la cabeza. (To María hurts the head.)
Instrument
- Juan abrió la puerta con la llave. (John opened the door with the key.)
- Escribió con un lápiz. (He wrote with a pencil.)
- Cortó el pan con el cuchillo. (He cut the bread with the knife.)
Note: Instrument is marked with con, not por.
Passive agent
- El jarrón fue roto por Juan. (The vase was broken by John.)
- La carta fue escrita por María. (The letter was written by María.)
Note: Agent in passive is marked with por, not con.
Beneficiary
- Juan compró un libro para María. (John bought a book for María.)
- Hizo la cena para ellos. (He made dinner for them.)
Location/Goal
- Puso el libro en la mesa. (He put the book on the table.)
- Fue a Madrid. (He went to Madrid.)
English
Agent + Patient (transitive)
- John broke the vase. (agent = subject, patient = object)
- María wrote a letter.
- The dog bit the mailman.
Patient as subject (labile verbs)
English allows the patient to become subject without special marking:
- The vase broke. (patient = subject, no marking)
- The door opened.
- The book sold well.
- The butter melted.
Note: No reflexive or passive marking needed.
Experiencer as subject
- John saw Mary. (experiencer = subject)
- Mary feels pain.
- Peter wants water.
- I like coffee.
Experiencer as object (rare)
Some verbs place experiencer as object:
- The movie frightened me. (stimulus = subject, experiencer = object)
- Coffee pleases me. (stimulus = subject, experiencer = object — archaic)
Instrument
- John opened the door with a key.
- He wrote with a pencil.
- She cut the bread with a knife.
Passive agent
- The vase was broken by John.
- The letter was written by María.
Beneficiary
- John bought a book for Mary.
- He made dinner for them.
Dative shift: Recipient can be direct or indirect object:
- John gave Mary a book. (recipient = IO)
- John gave a book to Mary. (recipient = PP)
Get-passive (affected experiencer)
- John got hurt. (John is the affected experiencer.)
- I got fired.
Chinese
Agent + Patient
- 约翰打破了花瓶。(John broke the vase.)
- 玛丽写了一封信。(María wrote a letter.)
Patient as subject (no marking)
- 花瓶破了。(The vase broke.)
- 门开了。(The door opened.)
Note: Chinese, like English, allows labile verbs without special marking.
Experiencer as subject
- 约翰看见玛丽。(John saw Mary.)
- 我喜欢咖啡。(I like coffee.)
- 我觉得累。(I feel tired.)
被 passive (patient as subject, agent marked)
- 花瓶被约翰打破了。(The vase was broken by John.)
- 信被玛丽写完了。(The letter was written by María.)
Note: 被 is a passive marker. The patient is the subject, the agent follows 被.
Instrument (用)

- 他用笔写字。(He uses a pen to write.)
Beneficiary (给)
- 约翰给玛丽买了一本书。(John bought a book for María.)
