English and Spanish use dedicated reciprocal pronouns and reflexive markers. Chinese uses 互相/相互 before the verb.
Overview
Reciprocal constructions express mutual actions: they hug each other, we understand each other.
- Spanish: Uses the reflexive pronoun se (and its variants nos, os) with plural subjects. Reciprocal and reflexive are identical in form; context disambiguates.
- English: Uses the dedicated reciprocal pronouns each other and one another. These are grammatically distinct from reflexives (themselves).
- Chinese: Uses the pre-verbal adverbs 互相 or 相互. There is no dedicated reciprocal pronoun. Reflexive (自己) and reciprocal (互相) are completely distinct.
Spanish
Se + plural verb
Spanish uses the same reflexive pronouns for reciprocity:

Reciprocal:
- Se quieren mucho. (They love each other very much.)
- Nos ayudamos. (We help each other.)
- Se escriben cada semana. (They write to each other every week.)
Disambiguation
When context is ambiguous, Spanish adds el uno al otro or mutuamente:
- Se miraron el uno al otro. (They looked at each other. — disambiguated)
- Se odian mutuamente. (They mutually hate each other.)
Without clarification:
- Se lavaron. (They washed themselves / each other. — ambiguous)
- Se peinaron. (They combed themselves / each other. — ambiguous)

When the verb requires a preposition:
- Hablan el uno con el otro. (They talk with each other.)

- el respeto recíproco (mutual respect)
English
Each other / one another
English has dedicated reciprocal pronouns:

Modern usage: The distinction is largely ignored; both are interchangeable.
Examples:
- They love each other.
- We respect one another.

- They are each other’s best friends.
- We borrowed one another’s books.
Distinction from reflexive

Chinese
互相 / 相互 (pre-verbal adverbs)
互相 and 相互 are adverbs placed before the verb:
- 他们互相爱。(They love each other.)
- 我们互相帮助。(We help each other.)
- 他们相互理解。(They understand each other.)
互相 vs 相互: Interchangeable in most contexts. 相互 is slightly more formal.
彼此 (each other / one another)
彼此 functions as a pronoun meaning “each other”:
- 彼此了解 (mutual understanding)
- 彼此尊重 (mutual respect)
- 大家彼此照顾 (everyone takes care of each other)
No ambiguity with reflexive
Chinese strictly separates reflexive and reciprocal:

一起 (together)
一起 means “together” and can imply cooperation:
- 我们一起工作。(We work together.)
