IntermediatePartitive & Quantitative Expressions
How languages express a part of a whole in Spanish, English and Chinese.
Compare languages
The partitive expresses a quantity or subset taken from a larger whole. Spanish uses de. English uses of. Chinese uses 的 or omits the marker when context permits.
Overview
Partitive constructions express a subset or portion of a larger whole.
- Spanish: Uses de to link the part to the whole. Quantifiers (alguno, ninguno, mucho, poco) + de + noun. Measure nouns (pedazo, taza, botella) + de + noun.
- English: Uses of for true partitives (some of the water), but many quantifiers precede the noun directly (some water, many people). Measure nouns (a piece of, a cup of, a bottle of) + of + noun.
- Chinese: Uses measure words extensively. 的 can mark partitive relationships, but measure words (块, 杯, 瓶, 群) are the primary strategy. The whole is often placed before the part with 中 (among).
Spanish
Quantifier + de + noun
- uno de mis amigos (one of my friends)
- algunos de ellos (some of them)
- muchos de los libros (many of the books)
- pocos de nosotros (few of us)

- la mitad de la torta (half of the cake)

Partitive article (no dedicated form)

- todo el mundo (everyone — lit. “all the world”)
