AdvancedHedges & Mitigation
How speakers soften statements, express uncertainty, and avoid commitment in Spanish, English and Chinese.
Compare languages
Every language has strategies to make statements less assertive. English uses a wide range of lexical and syntactic hedges. Spanish uses diminutives, the subjunctive, and periphrasis. Chinese uses adverbs, particles, and reduplication.
Overview
Hedges and mitigation soften utterances, express uncertainty, and maintain politeness.
- Spanish: Uses the subjunctive mood to encode doubt. Diminutives (-ito) soften nouns. Periphrastic constructions (más o menos, a lo mejor) express vagueness.
- English: Extensive hedge system. Modal verbs (might, could), adverbs (maybe, probably), approximators (kind of, sort of), and politeness formulas (I was wondering if…).
- Chinese: Adverbs and particles do the hedging work. 可能, 大概, 也许 for epistemic uncertainty. 有点, 稍微 for degree. 一下 for action softening. No grammatical mood like the subjunctive.
Spanish
Epistemic hedges (doubt/uncertainty)
| Hedge | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| quizá(s) | perhaps | Quizá llueva. |
| tal vez | perhaps | Tal vez venga. |
| a lo mejor | maybe | A lo mejor no. |
| probablemente | probably | Probablemente sí. |
| posiblemente | possibly | Posiblemente lo sepa. |
| puede que | it may be that | Puede que tengas razón. |
| igual | maybe (Spain) | Igual no viene. |
Note: These triggers require the subjunctive when referring to future or uncertain events.
