BeginnerDeterminers
How Spanish, English and Chinese use words that specify or quantify nouns.
Compare languages
Determiners introduce nouns and express reference, quantity, or proximity. Spanish articles agree in gender and number. English uses articles and quantifiers with count/mass distinctions. Chinese lacks articles and uses demonstratives and numerals directly.
Overview
Determiners are words that introduce nouns and express reference, quantity, or proximity.
- Spanish: Articles (el, la, un, una) agree in gender and number. Demonstratives distinguish three degrees of distance (este, ese, aquel). Possessives have full pronominal forms.
- English: Articles (the, a, an) do not inflect. Demonstratives have two degrees (this, that). Quantifiers distinguish count and mass nouns (many, much, few, little).
- Chinese: No articles. Demonstratives (这, 那) require classifiers. Numerals require classifiers. Possession is marked with 的.
