AdvancedCompounding
How words are combined to form new lexical items in Spanish, English and Chinese.
Compare languages
English and Chinese are highly compounding languages. Spanish uses compounding less productively and often prefers derived words or phrases.
Overview
Compounding is the process of joining two or more words to form a new lexical item.
- Spanish: Compounding is much less productive than in English or Chinese. Spanish typically uses derivation (-ero, -dor, -ción) or prepositional phrases (cepillo de dientes) instead. Some verb-object compounds exist (limpiaparabrisas, sacacorchos).
- English: Extremely productive compounding across all categories: noun-noun (toothbrush), adjective-noun (blackboard), noun-verb (sunrise), verb-noun (washing machine), and many more.
- Chinese: Compounding is the primary word-formation strategy. Most Chinese words are two-character compounds. Semantic transparency varies from transparent (黑板) to opaque (东西).
Spanish
Noun + noun (rare)
True noun-noun compounds are rare:
- obrabuenaventura (fortune-telling — archaic)
- cumpleaños (birthday — completes-years)
More common are coordinative compounds:
- sordo-mudo (deaf-mute)
- geografía-historia (geography-history)
Verb + object compounds
These are the most productive type in Spanish:
| Compound | Components | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| limpiaparabrisas | limpia + parabrisas | windshield wiper |
| sacacorchos | saca + corchos | corkscrew |
| parabrisas | para + brisas | windshield |
| lavaplatos | lava + platos | dishwasher |
| rascacielos | rasca + cielos | skyscraper |
| matamoscas | mata + moscas | flyswatter |
| guardaespaldas | guarda + espaldas | bodyguard |
| abrelatas | abre + latas | can opener |
Note: These are verb-object compounds with the verb in 3rd person singular form. They are written as one word.
Prepositional phrases instead of compounds
Where English uses a compound, Spanish often uses a phrase:
| English compound | Spanish equivalent |
|---|---|
| toothbrush | cepillo de dientes |
| bookshelf | estante para libros |
| car key | llave del coche |
| school bus | autobús escolar |
| keyboard | teclado (derived, not compound) |
| washing machine | lavadora (derived) |
Suffix derivation (preferred strategy)
| Suffix | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| -ería | librería | bookstore |
| -ero/-era | panadero | baker |
| -dor/-dora | lavadora | washing machine |
| -ario/-aria | diccionario | dictionary |
Loan compounds
Spanish sometimes borrows English compounds:
- software, hardware, weekend (Latin America)
- fútbol (from football, adapted)

Productivity
Chinese compounding is virtually unlimited:
- 网购 (net + buy = online shopping)

- 微信 (micro + message = WeChat)
- 微博 (micro + blog = Weibo)
